Video posted by CERN is a brief history of the LHC.
decided
Since its construction in 1977 until the day of their first real test and launched on September 10, 2008.
teaches us briefly as it was built, from the start and early partner countries until the day that a beam of hadrons gave his first return to the 27 km circumference of the LHC in Geneva.
Photography damage
Unfortunately a weld in one sector lead to breakage in several dipole magnets and this has caused a fault that in addition to economically costly has caused the delay in the actual implementation of the LHC until next summer 2009.

LEP Large Electron-Positron collider
Large Electron Positron collider
LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider) was an accelerator-collider e + e-circular for about twenty miles long, located a hundred meters underground on the border between France and Switzerland. Currently being replaced by the LHC. It was the last step of the complex of accelerators at CERN, and in it the electrons and positrons were injected and accelerated to final energy of a collision by using RF cavities. A dipole magnet system curved beams of electrons and positrons forcing them to follow a circular path.
The LEP, electrons and positrons circulating in opposite directions at relativistic speeds, grouped in bundles (bunches) of approximately 1.6 cm in length and a section of 0.3 × 0.01 mm2.
collision There were eight points, four of whom had installed two separate experiments: ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL.
LEP began operation in August 1989 and although originally designed for the production of Z0 bosons (whose mass is 91.2 GeV/c2) with beam energies the first phase scheduled for around 45 GeV and luminosities of 1031 cm-2 · s-1, the various improvements in recent years been introduced into it (including the installation of superconducting cavities) allowed achieving beam energies up to 104.5 GeV.
was called LEP 2 (also LEP200 or LEP-II) to the second phase of the accelerator LEP particle, where it has increased the collision energy in the center of mass above 130 GeV. This increase allowed the production of pairs of W ± and Z0 bosons. It was hoped that the successive increases accounted even reach the threshold of production of new particles, for example, the Higgs boson. The collision energies reached in the center of mass system for each year of operation, and the corresponding integrated luminosity collected in the DELPHI detector can be seen in the following table.

Thin Rings Around Polarized Saturn
How thin are the rings of Saturn?
brightness measurements from different angles have shown that Saturn's rings have approximately a kilometer thick, which makes them proportionately many times thinner than a razor .
The Cassini interplanetary robotic station currently in orbit around Saturn took another picture that highlights the thinness of the rings.
This artistic beauty image was taken early last month with an infrared light filter polarized.
of being alone in space, the unlit side of Saturn would be much darker.
However, the reflection of light on moons such as Enceladus and billions of small particles in the rings Saturn's giant offers an extremely bright cosmic sphere, an effect that is enhanced in polarized light. Source

Scientists working in learning more about the rings of Saturn.
What is causing the unusual shadows toothed rings of Saturn? No one is sure yet.
As Saturn is near the equinox, the rings gradually teach only their thin edge the Earth and the Sun
As a result, Saturn's moon cast long shadows on the rings. An example is the elongated vertical shadow of Mimas we see in the picture. The series of short, jagged shadows that go diagonally, however, are more unusual.
is known that Saturn's rings are made of particles for hundreds of years, but these particles have escaped to always be portrayed.
is therefore particularly exciting that a preliminary hypothesis holds that these shadows are jagged silhouettes of temporary groups of particles temporarily bound by its own gravity.

spacewalkers tested concept of planetary protection International Space Station Nuclear Technology
During the recent installation of the final set of solar panels on the International Space Station, scientists LOCAD-PTS measured levels of pollution caused by microorganisms . This test may prevent human beings from contaminating the sands of Mars.
March 19, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS, for its acronym in English) were tested to the presence of microbes before going for a spacewalk. This is the first time you perform a test of technology for planetary protection, one day, may prevent human beings from contaminating the sands of Mars.
"We did the tests using the LOCAD-PTS, a miniature biological laboratory for space travelers," explains Jake Maule, who is principal investigator of the experiment. LOCAD-PTS stands for English Language Lab-On-a-Chip Application Development Portable Test System (Portable Test System and Application Development Lab on a Chip).

"Before the crew of STS-119, Steve Swanson and Richard Arnold, leave the airlock of the International Space Station to install new solar arrays to the station, astronaut Sandy Magnus rubbed his gloves with one of the high-tech swabs LOCAD and then tested for the presence of microbes in the samples. The procedure was repeated when the astronauts re-entered the space station, more than six hours later ".. .

Do Breasts Have Capillaries
In physics, Nuclear fusion is the process by which two atomic nuclei join together to form a heavier atom.
The new core has a mass less than the mass of the two nuclei have merged to form it. This difference in mass is released as energy. The energy released varies depending on the nuclei that bind and the reaction product. The amount of energy released corresponds to the formula E = mc2 where m is the mass difference observed in the system between before and after the merger.
Infografia courtesy of EROSKI CONSUMER.es
atomic nuclei tend to repel each other because they are positively charged. This makes the merger can only occur in conditions of very high temperature or pressure to compensate the repulsive force. The elevated temperature increases the thermal motion of the nuclei and this may lead to merge by tunneling. For this to happen are required temperatures of millions of degrees. The same effect can occur if the pressure on the nuclei is very large, forcing to be very close.
The easiest fusion reaction to achieve (ie, requiring less energy) is the deuterium and tritium two isotopes of hydrogen to form helium.

NOSTRADAMUS
Who was Nostradamus? A true prophet or just a fraud and a dreamer?
Born in Saint-Rémy de Provence, southern France, the son of a wealthy Jewish doctor and the paternal grandson of a seller of grain. He was Jewish by birth, but since the authorities of Provence Jewish citizens forced to convert to Catholicism, his family was made externally to the Roman Catholic faith. As a child, Nostradamus showed great aptitude for mathematics and astrology. In fact, teachers often offended by his defense of Copernicus and astrology. He studied medicine at Montpellier University and completed his matriculation examinations in 1525. The plague soon interrupted his studies and was forced to travel around France to attend to the sick with ideas including a better diet, clean bedding, clean water and clean streets. It was while he was Nostradamus Young was found and exchanged information with several doctors, alchemists, Kabbalists and mystics in the underground renaissance. He was also skilled as apothecary, having created a pink pill, which was highly acclaimed at the time to stop the bubonic plague that apparently contained a strong dose of vitamin C. In 1529 he returned to Montpellier to receive his doctorate and then teach, but the closed and conservative view of the university forced him to perform again the practice of medicine and help cure the plague.
In 1534 he was invited by Julius Caesar Scaliger, to become Agen. There Nostradamus married a woman whose name is still under dispute, but they had two children. In 1537 tragedy struck at the death of his wife and two children, presumably because of the plague. At that time, Scalinger had a dispute with him and the church authorities asked him to face the inquisition in Toulouse for a rude comment made on the implementation of a statue of the Virgin Mary. He traveled through France and Italy several times. Perhaps in an effort to find himself, to stall the passing of the loss of his family, to find a sense of peace, began to explore mystical teachings. Whatever the reason, it was during these trips that the rumors about his prophetic powers emerged.
After a period of travel during which he kept busy learning and healing, was finally established in 1547 in Hall, where he married a rich widow named Anne Ponsarde Gemelle. He soon began to move away from medicine as it neared the hidden and the business of cosmetics. With its ability to predict the future, wrote almanacs year (first in 1550) and was due to its success was motivated to continue. Later he started a project to write 1000 quatrains (centuries), which predict likely future events and responses. However, due to pressure from the Inquisition, invented a method to obscure his predictions using word games and a mixture of languages \u200b\u200bsuch as Provencal, Greek, Latin, Italian, Hebrew and Arabic ... still
