NOSTRADAMUS Who was Nostradamus? A true prophet or just a fraud and a dreamer? Born in Saint-Rémy de Provence, southern France, the son of a wealthy Jewish doctor and the paternal grandson of a seller of grain. He was Jewish by birth, but since the authorities of Provence Jewish citizens forced to convert to Catholicism, his family was made externally to the Roman Catholic faith. As a child, Nostradamus showed great aptitude for mathematics and astrology. In fact, teachers often offended by his defense of Copernicus and astrology. He studied medicine at Montpellier University and completed his matriculation examinations in 1525.
